Dr. James Kennedy is one of Calgary’s most innovative and comprehensive cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeons. His surgical practice encompasses all realms of reconstructive, hand, and aesthetic surgery, with a focus on microsurgery, breast reconstruction, hand, and transgender surgery. Dr. Kennedy’s philosophy is to create a beautiful result that is elegant and refined while maintaining a natural appearance.
Dr. Kennedy is a board-certified plastic surgeon and member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Prior to earning his medical degree, Dr. Kennedy graduated from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Science Honors in Zoology and Psychology and a thesis on cardiovascular reactivity. Afterward, he earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary and remained in Calgary to finish a five-year residency in plastic surgery.
He then completed two fellowships, one in upper extremity surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and an additional fellowship in microsurgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. This allowed him to work in numerous hospitals nearby and gain experience in more modern surgical procedures like lymphatic reconstruction. He remains one of the few surgeons to undertake lymphatic reconstruction procedures in Western Canada and is often referred to patients from across the nation. In 2013, Dr. Kennedy was recruited to return to Calgary and join the South Health Campus’s founding faculty of Plastic Surgery where he now serves as the Chief of Plastic Surgery. He also devotes his time as a clinical instructor at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine.
Dr. Kennedy aims to make all his patients feel comfortable, secure, and well-informed. He is known for being intuitive and compassionate when it comes to patient-centered care. Dr. Kennedy is committed to offering an honest and no-pressure consultation personalized to the patient. He develops a thorough surgical strategy with outcomes that exceed the expectations of each patient and produce natural-looking results.
