Decoding Beauty Trends: The Aesthetic Society Annual Report

The Aesthetic Society’s annual report is the go-to guide in the world of cosmetic medicine and surgery. It offers a snapshot of the industry’s latest trends, innovations, and consumer preferences. For doctors and experts, it is a vital resource to gauge the direction in which the aesthetic field is moving, ensuring they stay ahead of the curve. For patients and consumers, it provides a transparent view of the most sought-after procedures and the evolving standards of beauty. This report is like a roadmap, helping both experts and patients navigate the constantly changing world of beauty treatments.

About The Aesthetic Society

The Aesthetic Society stands out as the premier global organization fully dedicated to aesthetic plastic surgery and facial and body cosmetic medicine. Boasting over 3,000 active members from North America and beyond, all members are either certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (USA) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. They bring a wealth of expertise in both surgical and nonsurgical aesthetic treatments.

The Rise of Nonsurgical Procedures

According to The Aesthetic Society’s 2022 Aesthetic Plastic Surgery National Databank report, one statistic stands out from the rest: a significant 14% increase in total aesthetic procedures. This uptick is mainly due to the rising demand for nonsurgical treatments, which saw a whopping 23% increase from 2021 to 2022. Nonsurgical procedures were boosted by large increases in infusions, skin treatments, body contouring, and neurotoxins. These numbers hint at a growing trend towards less invasive choices among patients.

Dr. Melinda Haws, MD, president of The Aesthetic Society, commented on the staggering growth in these procedures, emphasizing the industry’s adaptability. She stated, “With nonsurgical procedures witnessing a surge and surgical procedures still accounting for 70% of revenue, the industry is moving towards a future defined by dynamic trends.” Dr. Haws further highlighted the industry’s dedication to innovation and catering to the ever-changing preferences of patients.

Surgical Procedures: A Mixed Bag

Even as nonsurgical treatments gain traction, surgical procedures have not been left behind. The data does show a dip in surgical procedures in 2022 compared to 2021, but they’re still up by a notable 37% from 2019 figures. Especially in the bodywork department, liposuction and tummy tucks took the spotlight, boasting growths of 63% and 55%.

One interesting piece of data that stood out was that the Spring season (April to June) emerged as the most favoured time for patients to undergo cosmetic enhancements. Most surgeries (55%) were performed in the year’s first half. This trend holds true for both body and breast surgeries, along with other surgical procedures.

Financial Insights and Demographics

In 2022, Americans shelled out more than $11.8 billion on beauty treatments, a rise of 2% from the year before. The stats show a steady trend, with women taking the lead, undergoing a whopping 95% of all procedures. Breaking it down by age, the 51-70 bracket was in the lead, covering 36% of all surgeries. The 36-50 group wasn’t far behind at 30%, followed by the 17-35 crowd at 27%. Meanwhile, those over 70 made up 8% of the surgical procedures.
