About Belkyra

Belkyra is the first non-surgical injectable treatment for moderate to severe fat deposits behind the chin. It’s made up of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring chemical in the body. This naturally occurring chemical aids in fat breakdown and prevents fat cells from forming beneath the chin for long-term repair.

Commonly asked questions about Belkyra

1. What is Belkyra?

Both men and women are affected by fullness under the chin, which can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, weight increase, and aging. It is frequently resistant to diet and exercise on its own.

2. Why is Belkyra done?

One of the main benefits of Belkyra is that it is minimally invasive. Belkyra is an injectable treatment that destroys fat cells for patients with unwelcome pockets of fat around their chin, neck, and jawline.

3. How does Belkyra work?

It works through the use of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid that reduces the amount of fat cells in the area that it is injected into.

Deoxycholic acid is found naturally in the body, aiding in digestion and the absorption of dietary fats. The synthetic form of deoxycholic acid is used in the injections, and when injected below the chin, it begins its work to destroy fat cells in the targeted location, ensuring that fat can no longer be produced in that area.

4. Am I a good candidate for Belkyra?

You may be a good candidate for Belkyra if you:

  • Have a double chin (submental fat) that is resistant to diet and exercise
  • Do not want to undergo invasive surgery
  • You are at a healthy and stable weight
  • You are bothered by the appearance of your double chin

5. What can I expect when getting Belkyra?

Before the procedure: The process of Belkyra is an outpatient procedure. It is important to remember that you may need more than one session of Belkyra in order to see the results you want. Sometimes it can take up to six sessions to get desired results.

Before starting your treatment, your provider will place a topical numbing cream under the chin to help ease any discomfort before injecting the area. In some cases, your provider might mark a grid of dots under your chin to map out where you need to be injected.

During the procedure: After you are completely numbed, your provider will complete your injections one by one. The number of injections you need is dependent on the degree of submental fat under the chin. Most patients need approximately 20 injections, but as many as 50 might be required.

After the procedure: There will be some swelling after your injections, but this is a sign that it is working. For 90 minutes after your procedure, do not apply makeup and avoid touching the area. If you must touch the injected area only, do so with clean hands.

24-48 hours after your Belkyra treatment, avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, exposure to UV radiation, and places with high heat such as sauna, steam room, tanning beds, hot showers, etc., as this may worsen swelling or any discomfort.

You may be instructed to apply a cold compress for 5 minutes, five times a day, for five days.

6. When will I see the results?

Belkyra does not provide immediate results, but you will be able to see the final/best result after 2-3 treatments over the course of 6-8 weeks. It may take several weeks for your results to become apparent, as it takes some time for the fat dissolving process to be completed.

7. How long do the results last?

Belkyra is considered permanent – once the fat cells are destroyed, they won’t return.

8. How much does Belkyra cost in Canada?

Depending on how many injections are used, the cost of Belkyra (per session) can cost between $900-$1,800.

9. Are there risks in receiving Belkyra?

As with other injectable treatments, you may experience some side effects after getting Belkyra. Although rare, these include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Facial muscle weakness
  • Uneven smile
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Nerve injury in the jaw

10. Is getting Belkyra worth it?
